Theory Tests

Should you require it you can take your theroy test during your time with us.

Hazard Perception...

Hazard PerceptionThe test is based on the Highway Code along with various questions on vehicle handling, traffic law and a hazard perception element.

The Hazard Perception test was introduced by the Driving Standards Agency in 2002. This test will be taken at the same time as the theory test and takes around 15 minutes. The object is to identify up to 15 hazards as quickly as possible from 14 video clips. This will all be explained to you fully prior to commencement of the test.

Practice Makes Perfect...

If you have access to a computer, and in preparation to pass the test, why not visit the official Driving Standards Agency website at www.dsa.gov.uk . Whilst on this site you can practice mock Theory Tests and gain the experience of sitting the actual examination thus preparing you for the actual test itself.

The Theory TestYou can also purchase the following publications or disks which we strongly recommend to assist you:-

In The Theory Test you will be assessed on your driving attitude and responses, traffic signs and regulations, safety in vehicles and how the environment affects driving conditions plus the effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on drivers.

The Theory Test for car drivers consists of 50 multiple choice questions. Associated with each question is a list of potential answers. You select the correct answer, or answers, by touching the appropriate area of the computer screen. You will be given 57 minutes to complete the test and you will need to answer 43 out of 50 questions correctly to pass the test.

From 28th September 2009, you will need to answer a case study question as part of your Theory Test.  This section will also be in the form of multiple choice questions and answers.

Example of a case study question:-

You decide to visit your friend who lives 20 miles away.

The journey will take you on various roads including country roads and A roads.

You've been before so you think you know the way.  You also have a mobile phone with you, so will be able to ring for directions if you get lost.

During the journey you go the wrong way and need to turn round.  Later on, you decide to ring your friend to ensure you are travelling in the right direction.

To turn round after going the wrong way, you decide to make a 'U' turn in the road.  Before doing this, what should you do?

Mark one answer

A     Give an arm signal as well as using indicators.
B     Signal so that other road users should slow down for you.
C     Look over your should for a final check.
D     Select a higher gear than normal.
